A History Of Cracker Pie: 1450 Posts

I'm not sure many people know why I have this blog. I figured it was about time to remind or enlighten people as to why I post a picture and a rating from my Mom pretty much every day.

A few years ago my brother Lee passed away unexpectedly. It was devastating. The worst part was my brother John finding him four or five days after he passed away. I can't imagine how hard that was for John.

At the time my Mom was living alone in Jonesboro, Arkansas. We would talk often but not everyday. One evening we were talking and she was very upset. What if something were to happen to her? She was all alone. How long before someone would even notice she was gone? Her fears were valid. I thought about it all night and in the morning I had formulated a plan. I would send her a picture every morning. She would then text back a rating. I would know she was okay and she would get to stay updated with life in STL. I would send pictures of family, friends, vacations, pets and just weird random things. It was easy. Send a pic, get a rating, everyone was good.

Here we are. One thousand, four hundred and fifty posts later. It has grown into more than just a "check-in on Mom" endeavor. Because of this the relationship I have with my Mom has grown in ways I never thought would happen. It went from simple ratings to conversations via text to phone calls to FaceTime to visits. Beacause of the simple action of sending a picture everyday and in return sending a simple rating I now have a best friend and a confidant. Someone I know will be there for me and my family without question or judgement.

Even in the darkest of times there is a light. You just have to stay positive and great things can happen.
